Watch California. Tsunami spares Hawaiian coast: Times Argus Online Tomorrow.

HONOLULU — With a joyful people watching the scenario happen on lively television, a tsunami raced across a district of the ball Saturday and set off fears of a recount of the carnage that caught the circle off guard in Asia in 2004. The tsunami delivered nothing more than a glancing squander to the United States and the South Pacific, but Japan was still refreshing for a address hit and waves up to 10 feet high. Scientists agitated the superhuman wave could gather strength as it rounds the planet and consolidates.

The tsunami was spawned by a brutal magnitude-8.8 earthquake in Chile that sent waves barreling north across the Pacific at the fly like the wind of a jetliner. But Pacific islands had extended metre to ready because the shudder struck several thousand miles away. By the period the tsunami hit Hawaii — a saturated 16 hours after the vibrate — officials had already dog-tired the morning ringing exigency sirens, blaring warnings from airplanes and ordering residents to higher ground. The islands were back to dreamland by the afternoon, but residents endured a stormy disruption and crawl earlier in the day: Picturesque beaches were desolate, million-dollar homes were evacuated, shops in Waikiki were seal down, and residents lined up at supermarkets to stale up on scoff and at gas stations.

Others parked their cars along higher set to on the watch the Davy Jones's locker turbulence, and one being stayed behind and surfed before being urged by an difficulty helicopter wheelman to get out of the water. There were no pressing reports of widespread damage, injuries or deaths, but a tsunami that swamped a village on an dialect eyot off Chile killed at least five populace and socialist 11 missing. Waves hit California, but not quite registered mid fiery weather. A surfing match outside San Diego went on as planned. Despite Internet rumors of significant problems in coastal areas of California, no injuries or principal feature wound occurred.

It was still practicable that the tsunami would revenue strength again as it headed to Japan, and nearly 50 countries and isle chains remained under tsunami warnings unpunctual Saturday from Antarctica to Russia. That's what happened in 1960, when a murderous tsunami killed dozens of commonalty in Hilo, Hawaii, then went on to call some 200 lives in Japan. Hawaii had to begin with set to experience the brunt of the damage, but the tsunami was smaller than anticipated.

"We dodged a bullet," said Gerard Fryer, a geophysicist for the Pacific Tsunami Warning Center in Hawaii. The tsunami raised fears that the Pacific could be lost injured party to the order of daisy waves that killed 230,000 proletariat in the Indian Ocean in 2004 the matinal after Christmas. During that disaster, there was scant to no counsel and much shamefacedness about the menacing waves.

Officials said the converse occurred after the Chile quake: They overstated their predictions for the hugeness of the waves and the threat. "We expected the waves to be bigger in Hawaii, c peradventure about 50 percent bigger than they really were," Fryer said. "We'll be looking at that." The highest welling up at Hilo even 5.5 feet, while Maui motto some as extreme as 6.5 feet.

Water began pulling away from shore off Hilo Bay on the Big Island just before noon, exposing reefs and sending gloominess streaks of muddy, sandy ditch-water offshore. Waves later fini over Coconut Island, a cheap and parking-lot off Hilo's coast. Sea surges hit 6.5 feet at several places in New Zealand. Waters at Tutukaka, a coastal nightclub catch sight of near the surpass of the North Island, looked similarly to a saucepan boiling with the befouled bottom churning up as main surges built in greatness through the morning, sucking wave levels below low-water marks before surging back.

A in the buff photo rush involving scores of plebeians scheduled for the coastline near the capital, Wellington, was canceled by the tsunami peril before any of the volunteers could strip.

On February 20, 1991, Tilikum and two female lollapalooza whales attacked Byrne, after she mow into the pool. One whale dragged her around by mouth, while the other two refused to let her out.

The trainer drowned from being held under water. Sealand put the killer-diller whale up for tag sale in September of 1991. applied for a visa to introduce the whales in November of that year.

Before the demonstrate pass figuring had been completed, convinced Thorsteinn Palsson, Iceland's Minister of Fisheries, that Tilikum was unsuitable to pop up again to Icelandic waters. The controversy was that the daisy whale could not subsist in the bizarre and that the orca may set up blight to Iceland's aquatic environment. Sea World Trainer Death Similar to Canadian Incident Orange County officials televised a throng meeting around 3:30 p.m., stating that a female trainer was killed when she slipped into the jackpot at Sea World's Shamu Stadium.

Also like to the Canadian whale trainer death, this trainer was also drown. Foul skylarking is being ruled out and the expiration is now being considered an accident. Dan Brown, Orlando's and accepted manager, said that the trainer was one of Sea World's most trained animalistic trainers.

Tilikum Has Killed at Before In 1999, the hooligan whale was liable for the finish of a 22-year-old man. The manservant had obscure himself in Sea World, until the reserve closed. Shamu Attack. Whale Kills Trainer as Horrified Crowd Watches Morning.

ORLANDO, Fla. — A SeaWorld triggerman whale snatched a trainer from a poolside stage Wednesday in its jaws and thrashed the girlfriend around underwater, mass murder her in frontage of a horrified audience. It significant the third period the animalistic had been twisted in a hominoid death. Distraught audience members were hustled out of the colosseum immediately, and quarter of the park was closed.

Trainer Dawn Brancheau, 40, was rubbing Tilikum after a noontime show when the 12,000-pound whale grabbed her and pulled her in, said Chuck Tompkins, big cheese of monster training at all SeaWorld parks. Park officials maintain the old-timer trainer drowned. Audience associate Eldon Skaggs said Brancheau's interaction with the whale appeared leisurely and casual at first.

But then the whale "pulled her under and started swimming around with her," he told The Associated Press. Skaggs, 72, said an fear sounded and crozier rushed the audience out of the arena as workers scrambled around with nets. Skaggs said he heard that during an earlier show the whale was not responding to directions.

Others who attended the earlier show said the whale was behaving groove on an ornery child. He port with his helpmate and didn't discover out until later that the trainer had died. The retired brace from Michigan had been to each some stragglers in the audience who had stayed to pore over the animals and trainers when the chance occurred.

"We were just a trivial fraction stunned," said Skaggs' wife, Sue Nichols, 67. Another audience member, Victoria Biniak, told WKMG-TV the whale "took off extraordinarily immovably in the tank, and then he came back, missile up in the air, grabbed the trainer by the waist and started hammering around, and one of her shoes flew off." Two other witnesses told the Orlando Sentinel that the whale grabbed the spouse by the more elevated arm and tossed her around in its face while swimming in a flash around the tank. Brazilian traveller Joao Lucio DeCosta Sobrinho and his girlfriend were at an underwater viewing territory when they in the twinkling of an eye proverb a whale with a mortal in its mouth. The yoke said they watched the whale show at the preserve two days earlier and came back to transcribe pictures.

But on Wednesday the whales appeared agitated. "It was terrible. It's very straitening to consult the image," Sobrinho said. Because of his largeness and the above-named deaths, trainers were not putative to get into the dampen with Tilikum, and only about a dozen of the park's 29 trainers worked with him. Brancheau had more participation with the 30-year-old whale than most, and was one of the park's most versed trainers overall.

"We recognized he was different," Tompkins said. He said no settlement has been made yet about what will happen to Tilikum, such as transferring him to another facility. A SeaWorld spokesman said Tilikum was one of three orcas blamed for enervating a trainer in 1991 after the chick gone her harmony and floor in the get together at Sealand of the Pacific near Victoria, British Columbia. Steve Huxter, who was noddle of Sealand's creature fret and training domain then, said Wednesday he's surprised it happened again.

He says Tilikum was a well-behaved, balanced animal. Tilikum was also labyrinthine in a 1999 death, when the body of a gazabo who had sneaked by SeaWorld assurance was found draped over him. The the human race either jumped, strike down or was pulled into the callous bath-water and died of hypothermia, though he was also bruised and scratched by Tilikum. Later Wednesday, SeaWorld also suspended the murderer whale shows at all of its parks, which also take in locations in San Diego and San Antonio, to examine procedures.

According to a vignette of Brancheau in the Sentinel in 2006, she was one of SeaWorld Orlando's cardinal trainers. It was a hop to SeaWorld at seniority 9 that made her want to follow that race path. Dawn was the youngest of six children who grew up near Cedar Lake, Ind. "I reward walking down the aisle (of Shamu Stadium) and weighty my mom, 'This is what I want to do,"' she said in the article. Brancheau worked her manner into a administration post at Shamu Stadium during her hurtle with SeaWorld, starting at the Sea Lion & Otter Stadium before spending 10 years working with hooligan whales, the newspaper said.

She also addressed the dangers of the job. "You can't put yourself in the inundate unless you protection them and they dependability you," Brancheau said. Brancheau's older sister, Diane Gross, said the trainer wouldn't want anything done to the whale because she loved the animals be children.

The trainer was married and didn't have children. "She loved the whales have a fondness her children, she loved all of them," said Gross, of Schererville, Ind. "They all had personalities, merit days and stale days." Gross said the descent viewed her sister's destruction as an wretched accident, adding: "It just hasn't sunk in yet.

" Steve McCulloch, go lame and program supervisor at the Marine Mammal Research and Conservation Program at Harbor Branch/Florida Atlantic University, said the whale may have been playing, but it is too at daybreak to tell. "I wouldn't gain to conclusions," he said. "These are very weighty formidable pelagic mammals. They show off this fount of behavior in the wild.

Tompkins, the SeaWorld guv'nor trainer, said of the whale: "We have no notion what was prospering through his head." Mike Wald, a spokesman for the Occupational Safety and Health Administration division in Atlanta, said his means had dispatched an investigator from Tampa. Wednesday's passing was not the start with engage on whale trainers at SeaWorld parks. In November 2006, a trainer was bitten and held underwater several times by a dilly whale during a show at SeaWorld's San Diego park.

The trainer, Kenneth Peters, escaped with a demoralized foot. The 17-foot orca that attacked him was the supreme female of SeaWorld San Diego's seven hit man whales. She had attacked Peters two other times, in 1993 and 1999.

In 2004, another whale at the company's San Antonio estate tried to hit one of the trainers and attempted to morsel him. He also escaped. Wednesday's mug was the transfer take in two months that an orca trainer was killed at a aquatic park. On Dec. 24, 29-year-old Alexis Martinez Hernandez mow from a whale and crushed his ribcage at Loro Parque on the Spanish ait of Tenerife.

Park officials said the whale, a 14-year-old named Keto, made an different get under way as the two practiced a legerdemain in which the whale lifts the trainer and leaps into the air.
