Winners. Numbers event in Triple Crown News.

LITTLE ROCK - The beneficiary of a fouled tail and a scrubbed trip, Kentucky Derby conqueror Super Saver afraid nobody away from today’s Preakness. Twelve are signed up. The Preakness is narrow to 14 starters and advanced in the week at least 15 wanted to run.

Injuries and what not sidelined three. Leading up to every Preakness, the Triple Crown call in comes up; every year, plain numbers muddle of the quest. There were only six horses in the Kentucky Derby when Citation won the Triple Crown in 1948 and none of the 11 Triple Crown winners ever faced more than seven opponents in the Belmont. Including Secretariat in 1973, the aftermost three Triple Crown winners defeated a sum up of 21, 29, and 20 horses.

Three years after Affirmed swept the Derby-Preakeness-Belmont in 1978, Pleasant Colony won the firstly two legs before finishing third in the Belmont. During those three races, he pulsation 40 horses. When 2004 Arkansas Derby prizewinner Smarty Jones won the cardinal two legs and finished other in the Belmont, he defeated 33 horses. In 2008, Big Brown finished in obverse of 30 horses in the oldest two legs and then was ninth and terminal in the Belmont.

This afternoon, Super Saver will go against four of the horses he bone-tired in Louisville two weeks ago. "Not enchanting anything away from Super Saver but, if we switched trips with him, my horse unquestionably would have won the race," said Dale Romans, trainer of third-place finisher Paddy O’Prado. Other Derby trainers have said something similar, fragment of the aim that Super Saver has 11 opponents. If he wins, more redesigned shooters will be waiting in New York in three weeks.

Like in golf, the reckon of foes is a big deal. For example, Phil Mickelson began the ultimate throughout of the Players Championship five shots off the come and analysts identified him as a contender. Making up five shots on a contender or two is possible, but he trailed 10 players. One or more of those players was unchanging to situation a respectable globate on Sunday, implication that Mickelson would have to do something superior to win. In the end, six of the players in advance of Lefty opportunity standard or better and he carded a 74.

Unlike Mickelson, Super Saver will not have to hook a half-dozen or more opponents. Instead, the colt’s charge will green light him to instal a kind put and evade the latent trade problems that go along with coming from far back. His task will be to complimentary ticket the few in haughtiness of him and hold off the rest.

In the Derby, Super Saver hew in behind the front-runners who were bounce to relinquish after a break-neck half mile. Lookin At Lucky, the Derby favorite who was essentially eliminated when he drew the No. 1 dispatch position, deserves another endanger in the Preakness. After conquering the Rebel at Oaklawn Park, Lookin At Lucky passed on the Arkansas Derby and returned to California where he was third in the Santa Anita Derby.

Still, he can be counted as an Oaklawn horse and Oaklawn horses have won the Preakness four times since 2004. With Lookin At Lucky and Arkansas Derby runner-up Super Saver, an Oaklawn exacta is very doable in the Preakness. --- Harry King is sports columnist for Stephens Media’s Arkansas News Bureau.
