Antonio Fargas is best known for playing Huggy Bear, a funky alley canary in the 1970s cop show "Starsky and Hutch." Fargas also appeared in several "blaxploitation" films, including the Pam Grier spitefulness histrionics "Foxy Brown" (1974). And some may reward him as Doc on the sitcom "Everybody Hates Chris.
" But Fargas has been complex with projects that might in flagrante delicto his fans. In 2006, he performed in a preparation of August Wilson's "Ma Rainey's Black Bottom" in Manchester, England. And he's appearing in "The Real McCoy," the example Black Rep production. Like many actors who have enjoyed good in films and television, Fargas said, he had to reorder his priorities.
"I was waiting for the next TV show, I was waiting for the next movie, I was waiting for the next Hollywood thing," he said. "Which kept me away from one of my beginning loves, the theater." Written and directed by Andrew Moodie, "The Real McCoy" is based on the firm tall tale of Elijah McCoy, an inventor who is said to have inspired the phraseology that gives the sport its title. Fargas plays McCoy's father, George.
"Elijah McCoy had a God-fearing progenitor who wanted the best for him and didn't take it his observance to the discipline of engineering," Fargas said. "So there's a quarrel there. It's a recall amusement - and it's well-crafted, which makes it even more interesting." Of all his roles, Huggy Bear is the most beloved, Fargas said.
